USB 2. USB 3. Up to 5. Lighting to USB C. Direct from Manufacturer. This would be fine to use since standard USB power is only 5 volts. My wife's car has a USB jack for the radio, but you can also use it for power. I decided to make a power splitter for this USB jack that would only split the power. I cut off an end from an old cable and removed the molded end. I cut all of the wires but the black and red ones. I soldered these wires to the outermost headers on the circuit board and covered it all in epoxy putty.
I had to make sure I was bonding it in the right direction so I didn't end up with the jacks facing down. It didn't have the plug for my newest phone, which uses the USB-mini A style plug.
I decided that since I have a full set of adapters for any current type of plug, it would be more convenient if it just had a standard USB jack to plug into.
I took one of the larger jacks that I believe were for Qualcomm or older Motorola phones and removed the screws. I removed all of the spring loaded bits and the end popped right out. I soldered a standard USB jack in place and screwed the whole thing back together. Because the sides were wide open where the grey release buttons were, I filled the voids with hot glue and wrapped some electrical tape tightly around the whole thing.
Now I can leave all of these adapters behind and just use the generator, extension cable and the USB adapter. To me this is the perfect set of USB adapters. I have data connectors, extension cables, power connectors for the car and for emergency power away from a power source.
I can troubleshoot issues with usb ports on a computer and I can flip a USB plug over to use it on a computer with ports that are upside down. I have thought of using this process to make a few other types of adapters like a 90 degree bending data adapter and a USB to ethernet adapter to make extra long extension wires. You can use these steps to make any kind of wire, but I can especially see people making adapter ends out of any proprietary cell phone cables they have.
There is no point in having different cables twisted up in a drawer someplace, you are much better off consolidating everything into one little kit. Question 6 weeks ago on Step What's the difference between the USB 1. I heard that you need to be careful with that. You never mentioned anything what wire does what. You only said to match the color code. Have you ever dissected the various versions for comparison?
If it doesn't really matter, then why is there such a fuss about it? Reply 2 years ago. You could also use Friendly Plastic. It comes in different colors, or clear, and can be dyed. The advantage would be you can heat it to make it soft again, to disassemble your project and reuse the plastic.
Reply 7 years ago. I don't really know where you can get Sugru in a store, I think it's still easier to buy online. For this project I actually used epoxy plumber's putty which cures rock hard unlike sugru which remains rubbery and flexible forever. Hi, can you help my? I have an plug with 5 whire r,b,bl,y,g witch is coming out from my car multimedia and i want to atach on the end of the whire an usb to conect my dash camera. How to?
Reply 6 years ago. I've seen the "On the go" designation on cables before but never paid much attention to it. It looks like it has very little to do with the type of cables and more to do with the devices that are connected mobile devices. If you are asking if you can splice 2 broken cables together to make one good cable that still has the same combination of ends, yes this will definitely work.
If you are asking if you can splice 2 micro USB circuits together to move data between 2 mobile devices, this will probably not work.
Anyways the official adapter is very costly and is almost always out of stock. Would that work? And if it would how would I have to connect both end wires?
Same color with each other? And thanks for the reply. Reply 5 years ago. Hi, I believe you actually can! You just need to reverse one of the pins on one of the connectors. See image. I've got an extra iPhone cable and some old motherboards laying around.
Would it be a straight 1 to 1 link like the one you made from a soldered usb port stack or do you think there are some connectors flipped around inside the cable to get it to work? That would probably work. The tough part would be getting the female USB micro cable end from the circuit board of a dead device without breaking it. It would also be difficult to attach the SMD mounted device to a cable and not have it fall off.
I recommend the epoxy putty I used in this Instructable for securing everything together. I need to make an adapter that turns my micro sd into a usb. I know they're available but I'm not in the position. Any ideas? I think that while you could make something that would work in some cases, most phones wouldn't be able to read the device because they were never designed to. Anytime you plug those devices into a computer, there is a driver installed and there won't be one on the phone to read it.
Can I make a micro usb splitter? My tablet supports USB host and I have an otg cable, so I can stick a keyboard or a mouse into my tablet, what I want to do is that have a micro usb inserted into my tablet and two slots for micro usb, so I can use an otg cable while my phone charges.
Splitters are tricky in USB because the system still needs tip address the devices. If the devices were never intended to have more than one device connected and the is currently no such thing as a micro USB splitter, then I'm going to say it's probably not possible. Reply 6 years ago on Introduction. USB is a funny standard and just because something has ports that would go together, doesn't mean it would work the way you intend.
Mobile phones have USB ports, but they lack the hardware to act as a USB server so you can't connect a keyboard to them even if the adapters allowed it. If you are looking to hook 2 smartphones up to a car stereo or some other device with limited ports, the hardware itself only knows how to talk to one device and I wouldn't recommend connecting more than one device to that.
